Crawly! I had to tweak it a bit, but only because I didn't accept a some of the ingredients. No olive oil, then I used canola. No gravy mix, then I used onion soup mix and a can of cream of mushroom soup. No turnip, so I used a tin of diced tomatoes - Italian style. I also used a pocketbook of frozen stew vegetables instead of fresh. Because there was no gravy mix, I had to thicken it upwardly with a bit of flour and common cold water, which worked out swell! Made the Bisquick dumplings to accompany and it was DELISH! In that location is no demand for whatsoever other stew recipe, IMO.

Very tasty stew. Even so, I used Swanson's beefiness goop in a carton instead of water merely because I adopt a richer flavor to the gravy. I also added about one-half a cu of Merlot wine. I used all the other ingredients equally given and it was first-class. My problem is with the dumplings, but maybe I jut don't understand dumplings. The recipe doesn't say how big the spoonfulls should be. Mine turned out gummy and tasted of flour. I tossed them out and served mashed potatos on the side. We enjoyed the stew just as well.

This was absolutely fantastic! Great flavor. I did reduce the potatoes to near 4, and added canned dark-green beans and corn. I used Bisquick for the dumplings.

Love this recipe! I have yet to make the dumplings, aside from that I make the recipe exactly as is. My bf told me this was better than his mother's stew! Which is quite the compliment she can cook! He told me he wants it at least once a week if non more! The meat ends upwards and so tender, a definate must have recipe. This volition for sure stay in my cookbook!

I found this recipe actually easy to follow. Merely added my dumplings now then havent had a chance to taste them yet but I'm nearly sure it is going to be the best beefiness stew I have made in years. Thanks for this recipe.

WOW may family loved this fifty-fifty my 12 yr old son who HATES stew. I used bizquick for my dumplings and beef goop as someone else suggested.

This stew had a wonderful flavor! I've never had steak seasoning prior to this and I really retrieve that added more than flavor to this dish. I followed the recipe to a T except adding a big carton of beef goop & 2 jars of Heinz gravy in place of the gravy mix. When everything was done, I thickened the juice with cornstarch & cold water and made my dumplings. Dumplings soak up quite a bit of the gravy, and we love gravy - so I make sure there was plenty. PERFECT! Thank you!

This stew had a wonderful flavor! I've never had steak seasoning prior to this and I really think that added more season to this dish. I followed the recipe to a T except adding a large carton of beef broth & ii jars of Heinz gravy in identify of the gravy mix. When everything was done, I thickened the juice with cornstarch & cold water and made my dumplings. Dumplings soak up quite a bit of the gravy, and nosotros dearest gravy - so I make certain there was plenty. PERFECT! Thank you!

Was very good! I left out the turnip since I couldn't notice one at the store. The sauce/gravy was a fleck runnier than I've had in other stews, but still not thin plenty to phone call it more of a "soup". We enjoyed this - thank you!

I fabricated this for dinner terminal night the only real major difference is that I used virtually 1/two pkg. McCormick beefiness stew seasoning, added some black pepper, garlic powder, a few fresh basil leaves & paprika and I didnt take any turnips on mitt, it turned out keen and reminded me of my moms beefiness stew she used to make only her biscuits were made with bisquick.

This is mine and my boyfriend'southward favorite supper recipe. It is simple to make, and tastes fantastic! i dont bother with the celery, turnips, and take made it without the onions likewise, and it still turns out smashing!

Adept stew. Manner too many potatoes and too few carrots. The dumplings were great.

pretty good, just a little to salty. Family loved it

I LOVED this stew! I would add more veggies and maybe a piddling corn starch to thicken upwardly the sauce, but other than that, Awesome!!!

This was simple and like shooting fish in a barrel. I could not observe a turnip though. The meat fell autonomously in this and shredded past the time this was finished. I couldn't set up the dumplings as there was no room in my pot for them on tiptop. This made a huge pot full of stew. This is a proficient standard recipe and a swell starting point for calculation your ain variations and making this your own. I used hamburger seasoning and some Texas Roadhouse seasoning instead of Montreal. The gravy was a bit thin so I mixed another gravy pouch with 1/4 c. water and so added it in to thicken it a little. We left the celery in and used whole babe carrots. I did employ a mix of chicken broth and beef goop instead of h2o since I had them open and wanted to employ them upwards. This really needed a lilliputian something and neither hubby nor I could figure out what we were missing. I simply added a little black pepper and nothing else to this. I will be using this again only trying it in the crockpot the next time. I really want to use a larger pot and so there is room for the dumplings. I but made drop biscuits and baked them in the oven. Cheers for the dainty EASY meal. It did accept all solar day to fix though so practice program alee and kickoff this one early on.

I made this last night for dinner. WOW!!! I had to brand some adjustments since I didn't have all the items needed. one) Didn't accept a turnip, 2) Didn't have iv pkgs. of dry gravy mix only 1. Substituted 8 beef cubes and one cup of h2o and then added 1 tablespoon of cornstarch to thicken.
06/27/2012
this was delicious!I didnt brand the dumplings merely next time I volition...instead of turnips i used squashed...yummy!!!

best stew e'er made (merely one really) added actress gravy only its good!
01/25/2010
Really good recipe, adjacent time I volition add more carrots and peas.

Good recipe, my mom'south is a little different: For tender beef, sear the chunks for less time, just ii or 3 minutes, in butter instead of oil, and remove them to a basin to be returned later once the goop is in. Also, coat them in flour and pepper first; the flour cooks off and helps thicken the stew later and then you don't need gravy pulverization. Cook some mushrooms in more butter until they dark-brown, with bay leaf thyme pepper and whole cloves, add onions and root veggies (parsnips are crawly), fresh green beans, then a bunch of ruby-red vino to deglaze the chocolate-brown $.25 off, then the stock. Simmer for 2 to infinity hours. I love beef stew!!

Very good add some extras like sweet potatoes, beefiness broth, and veggies. Too used bisquick for the dumplings! Very good!

this was decilious my whole family unit loved information technology and picky eaters besides . I did add more carrots simply that was all will brand this once more. thank you for sharing this wonderful recipe
11/13/2012
Added garlic during the beef tenderizing simmer, I'd also add more than pepper, it was a bit salty then I'll take that into consideration the adjacent time but otherwise, my family loved it. Will definitely make this recipe again.
08/25/2010
I thought this stew was the all-time i've ever made. The merely change I made was using beef broth instead of water. I made this for visitor and received rave reviews. Definitely a keeper.
11/26/2014
I definitely "took liberties" with this recipe - simply it is forgiving, and a fantastic base of operations to tweak to your personal preferences. I used less water and gravy packets (considering my hubby doesn't like soups / stews very much so I keep them every bit thick as possible), used 3 large russet potatoes, omitted the turnip and used a packet of mushroom gravy and chicken gravy since I was out of "dark-brown". I added a little seasoning to the dumpling mixture as well - some garlic salt, parsley and basil. I but had 2 hours likewise since I started dinner later and then intended. Came out And then GOOD. The meat was still tender, thick with gravy and yummy potatoes and veggies, and the dumplings were fantastic. I will definitely brand this ane again.

Normally, I do non like beef stew at all, but my husband likes it, so I idea I would try this version. It was delicious! I used a packaged herb chocolate-brown gravy for beef to add together more flavor and it was awesome. My opinion of beef stew has definitely changed cheers to this recipe!

Only problem with this recipe is that the dumplings were kind of heavy... if y'all have this trouble add i tsp of baking powder to lighten them and grate your butter in from frozen. Other than that the actual stew was superb!!!
01/03/2015
Came out great!!!
01/06/2013

Like a lot of others, I didn't use a turnip. The taste was good and the beef nice and tender! My changes: I substituted beef goop for the water and added a packet of Swanson'due south flavor boost as well. I reduced the potatoes to five (plenty), left the celery in (I'd chopped information technology upward a bit more), added mushrooms and used flour/h2o for gravy portion since I'd already put the beef goop and season boost in, information technology worked out just fine. If I did information technology once more, I'd increase the carrots, add green beans in at that place, mushrooms over again and probably add more celery. I agree with the other reviewers--great recipe, can use more than veggies.

I used beef broth instead on the water and dry gravy. It was a hit! I will definitely be making this again. Perfect for a cold weather meal.

My girlfriend doesn't actually similar stew, only she liked this.. The simply thing I did different was used a carton of beef broth instead of the four cups of water, only I added a loving cup of h2o and one more than gravy package.. And then just earlier I added the dumplings, I threw in a bunch of mushrooms. This one is amazing! It's the only way I'm always gonna make beef stew once more. Great recipe!
10/29/2021
I absolutely loved this recipe. I always thought my mom made the best stew and dumplings only I have to admit this 1 tops my mom's except for the dumplings...mom's got you lot beat hands downwardly on that one. Fluffy Dumplings 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour 3 tsp baking powder 3/iv tsp salt Sift dry ingredients Combine 3/ cup milk 3 Tbsp oil (any kind)

This turned out sooo expert! It was the perfect dinner on a cold autumn day. There was a lot of simmering involved, but information technology was well worth the wait. I was hesitant well-nigh calculation dumplings to the stew, but they were a dainty pleasant surpise that added some flavor and texture. I'm excited to have leftovers for tiffin tomorrow!
12/xiv/2015
Very good. I used onion soup mix and a can of campbells french onion soup. Awesome.
01/27/2019
OH MY GOODNESS!!!! This is so good! I 1.5 x the recipe. I added 3 gloves crushed garlic. I used ribeye instead of stew meat and information technology was pull apart tender. I simply switched because I had dental work I needed something I could softly chew. I also ex-ed the turnips and added extra potatoes. The merely thing I'll change next time is marinade the meat overnight and I can not wait for side by side time.

This is a peachy recipe. Just changes I made were beef goop instead of water. No celery, didn't have whatever and not wild about it anyway. Used 2 ingredient beige recipe for dumplings. Thank you for sharing this great recipe!! Much appreciated!!!

This was so much meliorate than I anticipated. Putting dumplings on a beef stew was new to me, only accept ever done chicken. I was also worried it would be overly salty with the gravy packets but it wasn't. I did add a 1/ii loving cup of carmine vino to heave the flavor. This was so good and the dumplings were tender and perfectly cooked. This will be our new beef stew recipes.

Delicious

Followed the recipe merely added in a cup and a half of merlot and half a cup of water to first. Did everything else co-ordinate to the recipe. The scratch dumplings were a really overnice touch

I have made this twice now. I oasis't had turnips bachelor, so I left those out. I also prefer my ain biscuits, which I broil and pinnacle this recipe with. I used a can of beefiness broth, and so added water up to the level required to mix my gravy mixes with. I take constitute you lot tin can put the raw veggies in a wearisome cooker, height with the cooked beef and onions and and then add in the prepared gravy over the top. Information technology was ready afterward four hours on loftier. I'chiliad sure y'all could add in your dumplings at that point and melt for another hour, every bit I have another recipe where I practice just that.

Tasty! The family enjoyed it!
02/21/2018
i don't understand how this recipe attempts to boast " beefiness stew my mom perfected over 25 years.." perfected over 25 years?? 25 years??... and all she could come up with is Iv packages of simulated gravy? wow. yeah. no thank you. was looking for something more homemade, westward/o pre-processed gluten-laden over-salted gravy. yuck.

This is my go to recipe for stew and has been for years now. The dumplings are delish!
x/26/2019

Next time I will cook them much longer. Everything tasted even amend the next day. This is a great wintertime dish when you accept a large grouping over.
